Juke Box Magazine - English text

This monolithical work (400 pages, including a 24-page colour section) is a real event!  It elevates the history of rock and roll to a new scientific level.
During a period of eight years the author researched even the slightest detail with the patience of a Benedictine monk, the genesis of the Beatles debut years in Hamburg and Liverpool between 1960 and 1962.  By collecting all available information and adding it to his own substantial research, such as interviews, correspondence, detailed examination of the archives, etc.., Eric Krasker has relentlessly retraced the genuine saga of these rock and roll phenomenon who were to make their own contribution to a changing world.  All myths and rumours concerning these formative years are examined with a fine tooth comb.
The influence of the very underestimated Tony Sheridan is discussed as are the recording sessions for Polydor Records, with an incredible, precise and detailed study about the only existing version of "Swanee River" which was recorded by Tony Sheridan without the Beatles.
Another topic is the fictional character of Raymond Jones who is supposed to have attracted Brian Epstein's attention to the band.
The author looks back at the dismissal of Pete Best;  was he just a bad drummer or where there other reasons?
The death of Stuart Sutcliffe generated almost as much speculation, both 'dark' and romantic, as the death of Brian Jones.
All this was done by way of a clinical analysis where nothing has been left to chance.
This book is enriched with illustrations, many first hand.  For the first time the Polydor archives are visible as are amateur photographs of the young band and their friends at that time.
For all fans interested in Rock and Roll and music in general, although very complex at times, the effort is well worth it.
In one word:  INDISPENSABLE!
